A new educational toolkit on migration and asylum is being launched today by UNHCR Cyprus to 9 Inspectors and Counselors of Philological Subjects at the Ministry of Education, while UNHCR will be presenting the kit as from 2 until 9 September to the teachers who will be participating in the mandatory seminars organized by the Ministry around the country.
The toolkit “Not Just Numbers” has been designed to inform young people about the main issues surrounding migration and asylum in the EU. It is the product of a joint venture of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and is supported by the European Commission through the 2006 European Refugee Fund.
As European societies become more multi-cultural, the need to raise awareness and promote understanding of the many reasons for which people choose or are forced to leave their own countries grows. Thus, the objective of the toolkit is to increase knowledge about the different situations of migrants, asylum seekers and refugees in the EU.
The toolkit provides young people with the opportunity to understand that behind each anonymous statistic related to migration and asylum there is a human face and a personal story. In doing so it also addresses issues related to discrimination and xenophobia.
By means of short films, and an easy-to-use teacher’s guide, the toolkit provides lesson plans, learning activities and other educational resources that can be used inside and outside the classroom.
The toolkit targets children and young people between the ages of 12 and 18. At the same time it provides a resource for teachers and other educators as well as parents who wish to encourage informed discussion and debate among young people.
It includes a DVD and a teachers manual, translated and available for use in 20 European languages (including Greek) covering 24 EU Member States (including Cyprus).

Εκπαιδευτικός Οδηγός σε θέματα Ασύλου και Μετανάστευσης στην ΕΕ παρουσιάζεται από την UNHCR Κύπρου

Λευκωσία – Ένας καινούργιος εκπαιδευτικός οδηγός σε θέματα ασύλου και μετανάστευσης παρουσιάζεται σήμερα από την Αντιπροσωπεία στην Κύπρο της Ύπατης Αρμοστείας του ΟΗΕ για τους Πρόσφυγες (UNHCR Κύπρου) σε 9 Επιθεωρητές και Συμβούλους Φιλολογικών Μαθημάτων στο Υπουργείο Παιδείας και Πολιτισμού. Επίσης, η UNHCR Κύπρου θα παρουσιάζει από τις 2 – 9 Σεπτεμβρίου τον οδηγό σε καθηγητές που θα παρακολουθούν τα υποχρεωτικά σεμινάρια που διοργανώνει το Υπουργείο στις ελεύθερες περιοχές της Κύπρου.
Ο οδηγός «Δεν Είναι Μόνο Αριθμοί» έχει σχεδιαστεί για να ενημερώσει το νεανικό κοινό σε θέματα ασύλου και μετανάστευσης στην ΕΕ. Είναι το αποτέλεσμα μίας κοινής προσπάθειας του Διεθνούς Οργανισμού Μετανάστευσης (ΔΟΜ) και της Υπάτης Αρμοστείας του ΟΗΕ για τους Πρόσφυγες (UNHCR) και έχει χρηματοδοτηθεί από την Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή μέσω του Ευρωπαϊκού Ταμείου Προσφύγων 2006.
Καθώς οι Ευρωπαϊκές κοινωνίες γίνονται ολοένα και πιο πολύ- πολιτισμικές, γίνεται πιο επιτακτική η ανάγκη για ενημέρωση και προώθηση της κατανόησης των διαφόρων λόγων για τους οποίους οι άνθρωποι επιλέγουν ή αναγκάζονται να φύγουν από τις χώρες καταγωγής τους (είτε ως μετανάστες, είτε ως πρόσφυγες/αιτητές ασύλου).
Ο οδηγός παρέχει σε νεαρά άτομα την ευκαιρία να κατανοήσουν ότι πίσω από τις ανώνυμες στατιστικές για τους μετανάστες και το άσυλο, υπάρχει ένα ανθρώπινο πρόσωπο και μια προσωπική ιστορία. Μέσα σ’ αυτό το πλαίσιο αγγίζει ταυτόχρονα και θέματα διακρίσεων και ξενοφοβίας.
Μέσω μικρής διάρκειας ταινιών και ενός εύχρηστου εγχειριδίου για δασκάλους, ο οδηγός παρέχει σχέδια μαθημάτων, εκπαιδευτικές ασκήσεις και άλλα μέσα τα οποία μπορούν να χρησιμοποιηθούν είτε μέσα είτε εκτός της τάξης.
Ο οδηγός στοχεύει παιδιά και νεαρούς ηλικίας 12-18 χρονών. Παράλληλα, αποτελεί ένα εργαλείο για εκπαιδευτικούς καθώς και γονείς οι οποίοι επιθυμούν να ενθαρρύνουν την ενημερωμένη συζήτηση ανάμεσα στο νεαρόκοσμο.
Αποτελείται από ένα DVD και ένα εγχειρίδιο δασκάλων και είναι διαθέσιμο σε 20 Ευρωπαϊκές γλώσσες (περιλαμβανομένων των Ελληνικών) και καλύπτει 24 Κράτη Μέλη της ΕΕ (περιλαμβανομένης της Κύπρου).
